Many challenges were in store for UHCL’s Doba Basin project. Competing expectations from various social groups and management’s lack of experience with community engagement in Chad could have been harmful to the project’s stability. Luckily with capacity building, implementation of clear processes and the right tools, the local field team became autonomous in just a couple months. Even better, it was able to resolve all grievances, build a transparent and trust relationship with local communities, thus securing its social license to operate.
